“You are not alone in this journey called life. Life comes with ups and downs, smiles and frown. With every day that passes you are becoming a better person and getting closer to your dreams. The hard times are making you stronger and better. They are molding and shaping you into the person you are called to be.” -Brittney

Brittney Shauran spent most of her childhood fighting feelings of abandonment and low self esteem. Brittany and her mother were abandoned by her biological father when she was 6 years old. The subsequent feelings that she was ugly, weird or unwanted her throughout her childhood.

Thankfully Brittney had a mother who kept her spirit from being broken. Her mother frequently reminded her that she was unconditionally loved, continually giving her words of affirmation like,

“You are so special! You are so beautiful! And I know you are going to do great things. You are going to be someone special. The world is going to know your name, I know it!”

Embracing the exhortation of her mother, Brittney began to set out a list of goals she wanted to accomplish. Suddenly she began to discover the power behind believing in herself and following her heart despite her circumstances. As a teenager, she performed in a number of theatrical plays, reported for her school’s daily news program, won medals in track and field, and performed in dance. Brittney also hosted a local teen show on the local Chicago television channel, CanTV. She danced in the Junior Company for the Alvin Aiely Dance Company and the Joffrey Ballet. In 2008, she appeared on the hit television show, Americas Next Top Model. She then signed with one of top modeling agencies in the world, Elite Model Management. She began traveling to various high schools around the Chicago area, talking to other youth about following their dreams, setting goals, and making healthy choices.

Today, the 22-year-old Brittney Sharaun is currently finishing her Broadcast Journalism degree at California State University while writing children’s books, motivational speaking, modeling, acting, and reporting.

“I began living my dreams when I decided to start making healthy choices. I understand that to do all that is in my heart to do, I have to set up healthy boundaries—I have to guard the choices that I make and not engage in certain activities that will pull me away from my dreams. Your future is in your hands and you can be all that you put your mind to. The choice is yours. My mother’s words helped me realize this, so now I pass them on to you:

‘You are so special! You are so beautiful! And I know you are going to be and do great things! You are going to be someone special the world is going to know your name! I know it!”–Brittney
